“Cyanide & Happiness” Via E-Mail

Cyanide & Happiness is one of my favorite webcomics, but I can never remember to read them as I have Penny-Arcade as my homepage.

So my plan was to write a little script to parse Explosm.net’s HTML to fetch the URL to the latest comic, output it as a RSS feed, and then enable the e-mail subscription feature at FeedBurner. So, I spent 15 minutes or so writing the PHP script and when I went to go republish it via FeedBurner, I discovered someone had already beat me to it. However they don’t have the e-mail subscription feature on, so my problem wasn’t 100% solved. So, I cloned their feed, setup e-mail subscriptions, and here we are — now Cyanide & Happiness can be delivered directly to my inbox every day.

Don’t you use a feed reader?… Then again, they do tend to take up an absurd amount of time…

    Nah, I don’t. I prefer e-mail.

    What do you use though?

I use Google Reader. I think it’s a good workflow having them separate, so I can tend to “more pressing” matters in my email, then go to Google Reader to read up on the latest news and such. I’d much rather see 500 new items in my Feed Reader, than 500 new emails in my inbox. Besides, Google Reader makes it easier skim/sift through your unread items (sure, you could do the same things in Gmail, but they’re still easier in Google Reader).

    Ah.

Yeah, I don’t read that many sites and the ones that I do directly visit or get via e-mail.

When I first started using a feed reader, I probably read about 10 sites, but since it’s so much more convienant, I’ve ended up with 93 subscriptions (as of today). Mind you some of those are defunct or rarely updated, but it can still be a total time kill.

Dude, does this C&H Mail System still work? I noticed the last two days comics haven’t made it to my inbox. just wanted to know if it’s under repair or that?

    :-)

Not sure honestly as I switched reading it via Google Reader (RSS). I’d imagine so though, but I do remember it sometimes getting delayed and then sending like 3-4 at once. Dunno why.
